EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE ON THE VIABILITY OF THE HYBRID BETWEEN TWO SIBLING DROSOPHILA MELANOGASTER

PARK HYUNG-SHIK
Abstract
The effects of temperature on viability of the hybrid between two sibling species, D. melanogaster females and D.simulans males were investigated by using the various strains. The results of this experiment have shown that: (1) All of the hybrid progenies between D. melanogaster females and D. simulans males were completely sterile females,
and the temperature sensitivty of the hybrid varied from the progenies do not survive as sensitive one th fully viable offsprings as resistant one at 25¡É constant condition. (2) The manifestation of temperature sensitivity for the hybrid progenies was mainly controlled by genes located on the X chromosome of D. simulans males. (3) The
frequency of mutation for the hybrid temperature sensitivity can be modified by ethyl methanesulfonate treatment in both resistant to sensitive and their reversion. (4) D. melanogaster females also have effects on the hybrid temperature sensitivity, especially in the cross with sensitive simulans males. The OR females were the most reliable strain for the manifestation of temperature sensitivity of the hybrid with D. simulans males.
